about psychotherapy

Our first priority when working with people is to create a comfortable, safe, and confidential space to share and discuss whatever you like. Our approach is to help you to be more effective in your personality and more comfortable in your own skin. Sometimes people come to therapy with the idea that they would like to be a different person.  Although there are of course patterns and aspects of your life that can be changed, the goal of treatment is often to accept and understand who you are and who you are becoming as you make instrumental choices in your life. A talented therapist can discern the essential strengths of your personality from your troublesome habits and patterns, and can help you to experience the uncertainty of life with a greater degree of confidence and understanding. We are able to work with people who have a variety of difficulties including depression, low self-regard, anxiety/social anxiety, phobias, relationship difficulties, anger management problems, substance abuse and dependency, eating disorders and body image issues, and obsessive-compulsive tendencies. We are particularly adept at helping those who are curious, creative, and individualistic thinkers. We understand that you and your difficulties do not exist in a vacuum, and that the social context of your environment and your personal experiences must be considered to truly understand and help you.

Anxiety

Anxiety is a part of life. We all experience some fears and worries about how we are doing, where we are going, and how we are perceived by others, and increasingly, about the world we live in. But for some of us the feeling of anxiety becomes overwhelming and oppressive, and as a result we begin to avoid the things in life that are good for us. Therapy can teach skills that reduce the experience of anxiety, and help you grow into a more comfortable, confident, less avoidant and more adaptable version of yourself.

Depression

Most people will experience some period of significant depression within their lifetime. For some it manifests as negative thinking, seeing every challenge as a problem, every setback as a failure.  For others depression is experienced in the body, as loss of energy, focus, and even physical discomfort or pain.  Many of us tend to hide this discomfort, both from ourselves and from others, feeling embarrassed, ashamed, or weak. Therapy can help you to learn the skills of keeping yourself open to both joy and sadness without becoming overburdened by your emotions. While some sadness is inevitable in life, depression is not.

relationships

Relationships between people are the most complex, meaningful, and often most difficult parts of our lives.  Being close to another person can bring immense joy, or a deep sorrow; most commonly, it is some combination of the two.  While it is sometimes helpful to provide treatment to a couple or family, it is also not uncommon for people to work on their intimacy and relationship patterns in individual therapy as well.  We are able to help clarify issues, to teach effective communication, problem solve, and to provide guidance for alleviating stressors in relationships.

Work

Another common stressor in our lives is our work. We often find ourselves dedicating more time and energy to work activities than we would like to, and many of us have trouble finding meaning in our day to day lives as a result. Therapy can help to uncover or modify your pathway through life and direct you towards more meaningful work, a more balanced life, and an increased freedom to make choices about your career.

INSURANCE

Please note we will start accepting Aetna insurance in mid-2024.

We are In-Network with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois. We accept traditional BCBS PPO insurance, as well as the BCBS "Bluechoice" PPO (Marketplace/"Obamacare") policies.

We do not accept BCBS HMO insurance. If you are unsure about your specific coverage feel free to reach out; for most policies, we can easily check on your coverage and let you know before scheduling a first appointment.

BCBS "Blue Choice" Preferred PPO (Marketplace/"Obamacare") policies: With these specific marketplace plans we always encourage clients to call BCBS and double-check the coverage details. Unfortunately, with Bluechoice Preferred PPOs, BCBS doesn’t always share full coverage details or limitations of coverage with us. If you do call BCBS to inquire about your coverage, ask them what your copay and or coinsurance/deductible is for “outpatient individual psychotherapy in an office setting with an in-network provider.” This language will get you the correct info.

Most people with BCBS PPO insurance have a $20 or $30 copay, and insurance covers the rest of the cost.  Some people do have deductibles, but for most people, the deductible only matters when treatment is at a hospital (inpatient), not at an office (outpatient). In most cases, whatever your pay when you go see your regular primary care physician is what you also pay when you go to outpatient psychotherapy.

For more detailed information about insurance or billing click below for our FAQ section.

For out-of-network/self-pay clients, we are happy to provide you with a “superbill,” which you may be able to submit to your insurer to get reimbursed directly. In accordance with the No-Surprises Act, self-pay clients are provided with a “good faith” estimate of cost.
